I CALLED OUT FOR MOUNTAINS, I HEARD THEM DRUMMING

La connessione tra natura e l’identità personale, così come l’idea del paesaggio come componente del senso di appartenenza nazionale è un tema con il quale tutti hanno una relazione personale. Gli undici Ruandesi nella serie hanno dovuto lasciare il loro paese, nota anche come la terra dalle mille colline, perché avevano fatto sentire le loro opinioni politiche o chiedevano giustizia. Sono stati cacciati dai loro stessi paesi e dalla politica, e hanno dovuto cercare una nuova patria da un’altra parte. Sono ritratti nel loro nuovo ambiente e con i paesaggi delle loro memorie in Ruanda.

Miia Autio (Reisjärvi, Finlandia, 1986) è una fotografa e artista visuale interessata a presentare questioni sociali in modo che la conoscenza e la comprensione nasce dall’interazione tra il visionatore e il lavoro. Nei suoi lavori tratta temi di identità, estraneità e partecipazione del pubblico.

The connection between nature and one’s identity as well as the idea of landscape as a component of national belonging is a subject that everyone has a personal relationship with. The eleven Rwandans in the series had to leave their home country, also called the land of the thousand hills, because they raised their voices to express political opinions or to have justice. They got rejected by their own country and its politics and they had to find new home countries somewhere else. They are portrayed in their new environments and the landscapes of their memories in Rwanda.

Miia Autio (Reisjärvi, Finland, 1986) is a photographer and visual artist who is interested in presenting societal issues in a way that knowledge and understanding is born through the interaction between the viewer and the work. In her works she deals with the themes of identity, foreignness and viewership.
