HIDDEN MOTHERHOOD
Durante l’epoca vittoriana, i bambini venivano spesso fotografati accanto alle loro madri, con queste ultime coperte. La madre era presente nella foto, ma lo spettatore era incoraggiato a non vederla. Ciò suggerisce anche che all’epoca, da un punto di vista sociale, le madri non fossero considerate meritevoli di attenzione, soprattutto se paragonate al loro bambino. È quasi come se si venisse trasformati in un insieme di funzioni e si aspettasse di risvegliarsi e mostrare nuovamente il proprio volto. Ma chi deciderà quando sarà il momento, e la mano di chi rivelerà il volto?
Alena Zhandarova (1988, Birobidzhan, Russia) è una giovane artista russa. Usando la fotografia come principale strumento di interazione con lo spazio, ricrea una speciale atmosfera di magia a partire dalla sperimentazione e dalla freschezza delle cose ordinarie in situazioni insolite.
During the Victorian era, babies were often photographed alongside their mothers, with the latter covered up. The mother was still there, in the picture, but the viewer was encouraged not to see her.
This also suggested that, from a social point of view, mothers were not considered worthy of attention, especially when compared to their child. A lot of women feel the same. There is a sense of being hidden behind a veil, behind their children. It’s almost as if they have turned into a set of functions and are waiting to wake up and show their faces again. But who will decide when the time is right, and whose hand will reveal the face?
Alena Zhandarova (1988, Birobidzhan, Russia) is a young Russian artist. Using photography as the main instrument of interaction with space, she creates a special atmosphere of magic, which builds on experimentation and the fresh air of ordinary things in unusual situations.
