PhEST è fotografia, cinema, musica, arte, contaminazioni dal Mediterraneo.
PhEST nasce da una necessità, quella di provare a restituire una voce propria alle mille identità che compongono il mare in mezzo alle terre, quella di ridefinire un immaginario proprio e nuovo.
La necessità non è quella di cucire la distanza che il Mediterraneo crea tra queste identità perché questo mare semmai le identità le crea e le pone in relazione, ma di ricucire la frattura tra il reale e la sua rappresentazione fuori dal teatro delle verità, dalla scena della verità che spesso l’Occidente è in grado di imbastire.
Quando le voci autrici di quell’immaginario statico sembrano perdersi e vacillare, emerge con chiarezza la necessità di ridefinire, rivedere in forma non assoluta, ma in forma eternamente cangiante. Nel momento in cui tutto sembra dunque meritare una nuova definizione, ci sembrava giusto ripartire da qui, dall’idea destabilizzante di una continua riscrittura del presente.
L’area geografica di interesse, mai davvero restrittiva e sempre pronta a modificarsi, a estendersi, a focalizzarsi, coincide con la naturale panoramica di quello sguardo da qui, da Monopoli, dalla Puglia: il Mediterraneo, i Balcani, il Medio Oriente, l’Africa e oltre.
La fotografia contemporanea è il mezzo ideale per iniziare questa ricostruzione per varie ragioni. Per l’enorme interesse che il pubblico continua a riservarle e per gli sconvolgimenti da cui essa stessa è investita. Mentre noi parliamo è già diventata altro, diventa continuamente altro. E a ridefinirla costantemente non sono solo i fotografi, l’accademia, gli editori. Sono soprattutto il mercato e la tecnologia e il pubblico stesso. E così mentre ci si ritrova a tentare di arginare, di preservare, di tutelare la fotografia, il suo nome è già cambiato, e chi di fatto dovrebbe avere una voce importante in questo processo di ridefinizione si chiama fuori, nell’illusione di governare i cambiamenti. Noi vogliamo essere un piccolo nuovo spazio in cui questo dialogo possa trovare rifugio.
E crediamo che trovarsi a ridefinire i confini di questo universo in rapido movimento, dove l’avanguardia e la finzione si mescolano al reale, dove tutto si scompone per ricomporsi, possa portare ad una comprensione più profonda.Questi sono gli spunti di partenza, scansando i dogmi e affidandosi poi all’infedeltà del mare.

PhEST is photography, cinema, music, art, contaminations from the Mediterranean.
PhEST is born out of the need to give back a voice to the thousand identities that form the “sea within the lands”, the need to redefine a new, original imagery. The necessity is not to erase the distance that the Mediterranean creates among these identities, because this sea, infact, creates them and blends them. The need is rather to stitch back together the divide between reality and its representation, beyond the theater of truth, beyond that stage of the real that the West has often set up.
When the authors of this static imagery seem to get lost and waver, what emerges with clarity is the necessity to redefine, review everything in a non-absolute manner, in a continuously changing form. At a time when everything seems to deserve a new definition, we see the necessity to start from here, from the unsettling idea of re-writing the present over and over again.
The geographical focus zone, never limited but open to changes, expansion or zooming in, responds to the natural panorama the eyes perceive from here, from Monopoli and from the region Puglia: that is the Mediterranean, the Balkans. the Middle East, Africa and beyond.

Contemporary photography is the perfect means to trigger this reconstruction for many reasons. For the great fascination it plays on the public and for the unrest in which it lays.
While we speak, it has already changed, it continuously changes. And those who redefine it are not the photographers, the academy, the editors. It is rather the market, the technology and the users, the public itself. And thus, while we attempt to contain, preserve, and safeguard photography, its name has changed once again, already. So that those who should actually be the protagonists of this redefinition opt out, self-deceptively believing they are the ones who govern the changes.
We would like to be a small, new space where this dialogue can seek refuge. We believe that trying to redefine the borders of this rapidly changing universe, where avantguard and fiction are blending with reality, where all breaks up to reunite again, can offer a deeper understanding.
This is the starting point, avvoiding all dogma, and confiding in the infidelity of the sea.
