Alpaqueros indaga gli effetti del cambiamento climatico in Perù sugli allevatori di alpaca, “migranti climatici” costretti a traslocare verso altitudini sempre più alte o ad abbandonare il loro stile di vita e trasferirsi in città a valle, cambiando per sempre le loro vite e minacciando così la perdita dell’identità culturale andina. Il progetto aspira anche a mostrare gli sforzi scientifici mirati al contrasto degli effetti del cambiamento climatico sugli alpaca e al miglioramento della resilienza nei geni degli animali.
Alessandro Cinque (Orvieto, Italia, 1988) è un fotogiornalista con base tra Stati Uniti e Perù il cui lavoro esplora i problemi ambientali e socio politici dell’America Latina, legati soprattutto all’impatto devastante dell’estrazione mineraria sulle comunità indigene quechua e sulle loro terre. Ha ricevuto il fondo di emergenza dal National Geographic Society (2021) e dal Pulitzer Center (2021). Nel 2023, ha vinto il World Press Photo Award e il Sustainability Award ai Sony World Photography Awards.
This project aims to investigate how climate change in Peru affects Alpaca breeders by creating "climate migrants" who are forced to move to higher and higher altitudes or abandon their lifestyle and move to low-lying cities, changing their lives forever threatening the loss of high Andean cultural identity. It also aims to show the scientific efforts that seek to contribute to combat the effects of climate change on alpacas and to breed more resilience in the genes of the animals.
Alessandro Cinque (1988, Orvieto, Italy) is a photojournalist based between the US and Peru, whose work explores environmental and socio-political issues in Latin America, particularly the devastating impact of mining on Indigenous Quechua communities and their lands. He is a recipient of the National Geographic Society's Emergency Fund (2021) and the Pulitzer Center (2021). In 2023, he won the World Press Photo and the Sustainability Award at Sony World Photography Awards.
