The Darker the Night, the Brighter the Stars è un progetto a lungo termine che esplora la cultura giovanile nel quartiere Torretta di Napoli che ogni gennaio partecipa al falò rituale noto come il “Cippo di Sant’Antonio”. Col passare del tempo, l’enfasi del progetto si è spostata dal rituale in sé all'accompagnamento dei partecipanti fino all’età adulta, documentando l’evoluzione delle loro relazioni e lo sviluppo della loro identità individuale e collettiva.
Glauco Canalis (Sicilia, Italia, 1990), fotografo documentarista di base a Londra, ha forgiato la sua identità e la sua estetica visiva nel cuore della cultura mediterranea. Il suo lavoro esplora le nozioni di paesaggio e identità, con lo studio della giovinezza come tema principale.
“The Darker the Night, the Brighter the Stars” is a longterm project exploring youth culture in the Torretta district in Napoli. Every January, the community takes part in a bonfire ritual known as ‘Cippo di Sant’Antonio’: a tradition stemming from a pagan ritual in which peasants constructed fires with domestic waste, symbolically celebrating the end of winter and seeking protection for the new year ahead. Over time the emphasis of this project has shifted from focusing on the ritual to accompanying the participants into adulthood; following the evolution of their relationships, and the development of their individual and collective identity.
Glauco Canalis (Sicily, Italy, 1990), documentary photographer based in London, forged his identity and visual aesthetic in the heart of the Mediterranean culture. His work examines the notions of landscape and identity keeping the study of youth as a central theme.
