Classroom Portraits
Composto da oltre 450 ritratti provenienti da più di 20 paesi, l’archivio Classroom Portraits offre una documentazione tipologica globale dell’ambiente scolastico e dei bambini che lo vivono nei primi anni del XXI secolo. Il modo in cui gli alunni si vestono per andare a scuola rivela qualcosa sulla loro società, così come le immagini o gli avvisi affissi alle pareti (o la loro assenza), collocati lì per informare, motivare o semplicemente per fini decorativi. Le immagini confermano che il modello fondamentale dell’aula è sempre lo stesso, ovunque nel mondo, ma rivelano anche un’incredibile varietà all'interno di quello spazio.
Julian Germain (Londra, 1962) ha iniziato a interessarsi alla fotografia durante gli anni scolastici. Ha poi approfondito gli studi in materia presso il Trent Polytechnic di Nottingham e il Royal College of Art di Londra. Ha esposto le sue opere a livello internazionale, in particolare presso la Photographer’s Gallery di Londra, la Parco Gallery di Tokyo, il MASP di San Paolo e il Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art di Gateshead. Classroom Portraits (2004-2012) – un’ampia indagine di Germain a livello globale sui temi dell’istruzione e dell’infanzia in diverse culture – è stata esposta al Netherlands Fotomuseum e pubblicata da Prestel.
Consisting of more than 450 portraits from over 20 countries, the “Classroom Portraits” archive provides a global typological record of the school environment and of the children who are experiencing it in the early part of the twenty-first century. The way pupils dress for school says something about their society, as do the pictures or notices on the walls (or lack of them), put there to inform, motivate or simply decorate. The images confirm that the basic classroom model is always the same wherever you are in the world but also reveal incredible variety within that space.
Julian Germain (London, 1962) became interested in photography at school. He went on to study it at Trent Polytechnic in Nottingham and the Royal College of Art in London..He has exhibited his work internationally, notably at the Photographer’s Gallery, London; Parco Gallery, Tokyo; MASP, Sao Paulo; Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead. “Classroom Portraits”, 2004 - 2012, Germain’s extensive global survey about education and childhood in different cultures was exhibited at the Netherlands Fotomuseum and published by Prestel.
