When Buddha Stopped Smiling indaga le conseguenze dei test nucleari condotti a Pokhran, nel deserto del Rajasthan. Attraverso ritratti, paesaggi e immagini costruite, Chinky Shukla racconta come un evento storico continui a manifestarsi nella memoria collettiva, nel corpo e nel territorio. Il progetto riflette sul costo umano ed ecologico della corsa agli armamenti nucleari, dando spazio alle comunità che ne portano ancora oggi le cicatrici.
Chinky Shukla è una fotografa e visual storyteller indiana con base a Nuova Delhi. Il suo lavoro affronta temi sociali, ambientali e umanitari, concentrandosi sulle conseguenze a lungo termine di eventi storici e politici sulle comunità. Attraverso fotografia documentaria e immagini costruite, esplora il rapporto tra memoria, territorio e identità, dando voce a storie spesso marginalizzate o poco visibili.
“When Buddha Stopped Smiling” examines the aftermath of the nuclear tests conducted in Pokhran, in India’s Rajasthan desert. Through portraits, landscapes and constructed imagery, Chinky Shukla explores how a historical event remains embedded in collective memory, bodies and land. The project reflects on the human and ecological cost of nuclear power, giving visibility to communities that continue to live with its consequences.
Chinky Shukla is an Indian photographer and visual storyteller based in New Delhi. Her work focuses on social, environmental and humanitarian issues, examining the long-term impact of historical and political events on communities. Combining documentary photography with constructed imagery, she explores the relationship between memory, landscape and identity, bringing visibility to stories that are often overlooked.
