La prostituzione è stata tradizionalmente presentata e spiegata concentrandosi su chi vende il proprio corpo. Per sette anni ho viaggiato nelle città che hanno un legame con questo business per arrivare a raccogliere un totale di 100 immagini e interviste in cui gli uomini condividono le loro motivazioni e opinioni sul pagamento del sesso. A tutti gli uomini è stato chiesto di parlare della loro prima esperienza, delle loro motivazioni, dei loro sentimenti e delle loro opinioni, e tutti gli uomini sono stati pagati per il loro tempo e per condividere la loro privacy con una persona sconosciuta che ero io.
Cristina De Middel (Alicante, Spagna, 1975), dopo 10 anni di lavoro come fotoreporter, ha iniziato a indagare l’ambiguo rapporto della fotografia con la verità. Mescolando documentario e pratiche fotografiche concettuali, mette in discussione gli stereotipi e le verità assolute che i media solitamente impongono.
Cristina è membro del consiglio di amministrazione della Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation e del Vist Projects. Nel 2017 ha ricevuto il Premio Nazionale di Fotografia (Spagna) ed è entrata a far parte di Magnum Photos, di cui è presidente dal 2022.
Prostitution has traditionally been presented and explained focusing on those who sell their body. For 7 years, I traveled to the cities that have a link with the business to collect a total of 100 images and interviews in which the men share their motivations and opinions about paying for sex. All the men were asked about their first experience, their motivations, their feelings and their opinions, and all the men were paid for their time and for sharing their privacy with an unknown person that was me.
Cristina De Middel (Alicante, Spain, 1975), after 10 years as a photojournalist, started to investigate photography’s ambiguous relationship to truth. Blending documentary with conceptual photographic practices, she questions stereotypes and absolute truths that media usually imposes.
Cristina is a board member at the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation and at the Vist Projects. In 2017 she received the National Prize of Photography (Spain) and became part of Magnum Photos, which she is the president of since 2022.
