LINES AND LINEAGE

Tomas van Houtryve ha usato una tecnica di scatto dei primi tempi del mezzo fotografico – con lastre di vetro e una macchina fotografica del diciannovesimo secolo – per produrre una serie che porta alla luce un capitolo scordato della storia americana ma che punta anche alla questione sociopolitica attuale della frontiera sud degli Stati Uniti. 

Spesso dimentichiamo che la frontiera tra il Messico e gli Stati Uniti non è sempre stata dove si trova oggi. Originalmente, i popoli indigeni della regione vivevano qui, poi la maggior parte di questa terra è diventata parte del territorio prima spagnolo e dopo messicano, per poi diventare quello che chiamiamo l’American West.

Tomas van Houtryve (California, Stati Uniti, 1975) ha studiato filosofia e fotogiornalismo all’Università del Colorado in Boulder. Di base a Parigi, si occupa spesso di questioni d’identità, memoria, e potere, intrecciando nella sua fotografia il giornalismo investigativo, la filosofia, e la metafora. Nel 2011, è stato finalista del Leica Oskar Barnack Award. È membro emerito dell’Agenzia VII.

Tomas van Houtryve makes use of a process from the early days of the medium–using glass plates and a nineteenth-century camera– in order to produce a series that brings to light a forgotten chapter of American history – while also pointing towards the current, socio-political issue of the southern border. 

Originally home to the indigenous peoples of the region, much of this land was Spanish and then Mexican territory for centuries before becoming what we now think of as the American West.

Tomas van Houtryve (California, USA, 1975) studied philosophy and photojournalism at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Based in Paris, he frequently deals with questions of identity, memory and power weaving in his photography investigative journalism, philosophy and metaphor. In 2011, he was a Leica Oskar Barnack Award finalist. He is a Member Emeritus of the VII Agency.
