L’opera si ispira all’affermazione che l’ornitologo Robert Stroud, noto come “The Birdman of Alcatraz”, pronunciò nel momento della liberazione dalla prigione americana, quando dichiarò che, nel tempo a venire, si sarebbe dedicato unicamente a “misurare le nuvole”.
Il soggetto rappresentato è un uomo che, protendendo le braccia verso il cielo, si erge su una scala da biblioteca, sorreggendo con entrambe le mani una riga da geometra, nel gesto di misurare gli oggetti celesti. La figura sembra ritrarre lo stesso artista, ma è di fatto modellata sul corpo del suo fratello più giovane, Emiel Fabre, che morì in tenera età.
Jan Fabre vive e opera ad Anversa in Belgio. È un artista visivo, creatore teatrale e autore. Risale al 1979 la sua prima mostra alla galleria Workshop 77 di Anversa. Partecipa a importanti manifestazioni internazionali come la Biennale di Venezia (1984, 1990, 1997, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2017), Documenta Kassel (1987, 1992, 2017).

The work is inspired by a statement made by famous ornithologist Robert Stroud, also known as “The Birdman of Alcatraz”, upon his release from the American jail, declaring that, for the future, he would dedicate his life solely to “measuring the clouds”.
The subject represented is a man who, stretching his arms towards the sky, stands on a library ladder, sustaining with both hands a surveyor’s ruler, in the gesture of measure celestial objects. The sculpture seems to be a portrait of the artist himself, but it is actually modeled after the body of his younger brother, Emiel Fabre, who died at an early age.
Jan Fabre lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. He is a visual artist, as well as a theatre creator and author. His first exhibition was in 1979, at Workshop 77gallery in Antwerp. He has taken part in important international events such as the Venice Biennale (1984, 1990, 1997, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2017), and Documenta Kassel (1987, 1992, 2017).
