GREGG SEGAL
7 Days of Garbage

To highlight the crisis of consumption and emphasize the shared responsibility of the waste generated, the artist asked family, friends, neighbors, and other acquaintances to save their trash for a week and then lie down to be photographed in it. The settings were created in the artist’s backyard in Altadena, California—water, sand, snow, forest—highlighting that no sphere of the collective home is safe from garbage. These portraits are seen as instant archaeology, preserving the legacy of a consumer culture in which people are simultaneously victims and perpetrators, feathering their nests with waste.
