Sam Youkilis cattura gli aneliti e le promesse del viaggio e la bellezza del quotidiano con grande attenzione per dettagli, luce e ricchezza dei colori. In modo quasi rituale, il fotografo e regista newyorkese documenta ogni mattina la vista dalla sua finestra prima di passeggiare per le strade come un attento osservatore, utilizzando il suo iPhone per catturare le situazioni apparentemente banali che si svolgono davanti ai suoi occhi. Oltre al successo ottenuto con i lavori commissionati nel campo della fotografia commerciale di moda, Youkilis ha sviluppato un proprio metodo e una propria estetica visiva. Utilizza i viaggi di lavoro come un’opportunità per esplorare scene ripetitive di svago turistico, che cattura in brevi e suggestivi video. Pioniere di una nuova forma narrativa, Youkilis condivide i suoi appunti visivi – che combinano fotografia di strada, fotografia di viaggio e fotografia documentaria – con un vasto pubblico su Instagram.

Sam Youkilis (nato nel 1993 a New York) ha studiato al Bard College con Stephen Shore, An-My Lê e altri. Cresciuto a New York City, ha scoperto la fotografia al liceo, con i suoi amici come primi soggetti. Con l'evolversi della sua pratica, la sua attenzione si è spostata sulla cattura della vita quotidiana: processi, attività, persone e usanze locali ovunque si trovasse. Youkilis ha lavorato per il New Yorker, il New York Times, ZEIT, Vogue e per acclamati marchi di moda come Prada, Vivienne Westwood, Jacquemus e molti altri. Il suo lavoro è diventato sempre più popolare e ha guadagnato oltre settecentomila follower su Instagram. La prima monografia di Youkilis, Somewhere 2017-2023, è stata pubblicata da Loose Joints nel novembre 2023. Vive tra l’Italia e il Messico.

Sam Youkilis captures the yearnings and promises of travel as well as the beauty of the everyday with great attention to detail, light, and rich colors. In a nearly ritualistic manner, the New York photographer and filmmaker documents the view from his window every morning before strolling through the streets as an alert observer, using his iPhone to capture the seemingly trivial situations that unfold before his eyes. In addition to his success with commissioned work in commercial fashion photography, Youkilis has developed his own methods and visual aesthetics. He uses work-related travel as an opportunity to explore repetitive scenes of touristic leisure, which he captures in short, atmospheric videos. As a pioneer of a new narrative form, Youkilis shares his visual notes—which combine street photography, travel photography, and documentary photography—with a broad audience on Instagram.

Sam Youkilis (b. 1993, New York) studied at Bard College with Stephen Shore, An-My Lê, and others. Growing up in New York City, he discovered photography in high school, with his friends as his first subjects. As his practice evolved, his focus shifted to capturing daily life: processes, activities, people, and local customs wherever he finds himself. Youkilis has worked for The New Yorker, The New York Times, ZEIT, Vogue, and acclaimed fashion labels including Prada, Vivienne Westwood, Jacquemus, and many more. His work has become increasingly popular, gaining over seven hundred thousand followers on Instagram. Youkilis’s first monograph, “Somewhere 2017–2023”, was published by Loose Joints in November 2023. He lives between Italy and Mexico.
