Con il progetto Migranesimo Alex Majoli esplora la frammentazione e la polarizzazione dell’identità europea, che sta facendo i conti con la consapevolezza di non poter continuare a isolarsi dalla crisi in corso nel Mediterraneo. La sua sperimentazione stilistica si avvale di un linguaggio cinematografico e cupo che, nel portare in primo piano gli aspetti teatrali della vita, rende teatrale la realtà stessa.
Le scene drammatiche di migranti e rifugiati che lasciano le loro case devastate dalla guerra e dalla povertà e che arrivano stremati sulle spiagge del sud dell’Europa e ai suoi confini orientali, non sono che i momenti iniziali di un lungo processo di integrazione e accettazione - o del suo mancato avvio.
Alex Majoli (Ravenna, 1971) è un fotografo italiano. Per molti anni ha lavorato come fotogiornalista e l’esperienza acquisita sul campo lo ha portato ad esplorare l’idea della teatralità della vita. La linea sottile tra realtà e teatro, documentario e arte, comportamento umano e recita è il tipo di tensione che continua ad affascinare Majoli e a portarlo sulle strade e nei luoghi in cui la condizione umana viene messa in discussione.
Alex Majoli vive a New York. È membro di Magnum Photos dal 2001 ed è rappresentato dalla Howard Greenberg Gallery di New York.
With “Migranesimo”, Alex Majoli is exploring the fragmentation and polarization of Europe’s identity as it struggles to come to terms with the realization that it can no longer isolate itself from the crisis unfolding just across the Mediterranean. His stilistic experimentation using an overall dark and cinematic tone, ends up making reality theatrical.
The dramatic scenes of migrants and refugees fleeing their war-torn and poverty-stricken homes and arriving exhausted at southern European beaches and eastern European borders are but one commencing moment in a long process of acceptance and assimilation - or lack thereof.
Alex Majoli (Ravenna, Italy, 1971) is an Italian photographer. Throughout the years, he has worked as a photojournalist. His many years of experience photographing people in all kinds of circumstances have brought him to explore the idea of being actors in our own lives. The thin line between reality and theater, documentary and art, human behavior and acting is the kind of friction that keeps fascinating him and keeps making him return to the streets and places where the human condition is called into question.
Alex lives in New York. He is a member of Magnum Photos since 2001 and is represented by Howard Greenberg Gallery NY.
