THE POTEMKIN VILLAGE

Il progetto di Gregor Sailer, realizzato tra il 2015 e il 2017, presenta reali costruzioni architettoniche create per motivi politici, militari ed economici. Rifacendosi alla leggenda del generale Potemkin, che fece “travestire” intere zone della Crimea, recentemente conquistata, per nasconderne lo stato malandato al passaggio di Caterina II di Russia, le immagini di The Potemkin Village danno allo spettatore accesso a un mondo di falsi, copie, e scenografie e chiamano in causa le assurde aberrazioni della nostra società contemporanea.

Gregor Sailer (1980, Schwaz, Austria) vive e lavora in Tirolo, Austria. Tra il 2002 e il 2007, Gregor Sailer ha studiato comunicazione e design, con un focus sulla fotografia e il cinema sperimentale, all’università di Dortmund di scienze applicate e arti. Nel 2015 ha ottenuto un master in studi fotografici dallo stesso istituto. Gregor ha ricevuto numerosi premi internazionali e ha avuto varie pubblicazioni e mostre a New York, Washington, Parigi, Berlino, Francoforte, Colonia, Monaco, Perth, Arles, Salisburgo, Krasnoyarsk, New Delhi, Barcellona, Vienna, Praga e Budapest.

The project by Gregor Sailer, realized between 2015 and 2017, presents actual architectural manifestations driven by political, military, and economic motives. Tracing back to the Russian field marshal Potemkin, who purportedly “dressed” areas of the recently conquered Russian territory in an effort to veil its run-down state during Catherine the Great’s trip through the region, the project “The Potemkin Village” offer the viewer access to the world of fakes, copies, and stage sets, at times absurd aberrations of our contemporary society.

Gregor Sailer (1980, Schwaz, Austria) lives and works in Tyrol, Austria. Between 2002 and 2007, Gregor Sailer studied communication design, with a focus on photography and experimental film, at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. In 2015 he was granted his master’s degree in photographic studies from the same institution. He has since received numerous international awards and produced several publications and exhibitions in New York, Washington D.C., Paris, Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, Munich, Perth, Arles, Salzburg, Krasnoyarsk, New Delhi, Barcelona, Vienna, Prague, and Budapest.
