Nel 2021, Adam è stata selezionata come unica donna membro dell’equipaggio tra un milione di candidati per partecipare a dearMoon, un programma di circumnavigazione lunare di una settimana all’estero con la Starship di Elon Musk e SpaceX lanciato dal miliardario giapponese Yusaku Maezawa. Per tre anni, Adam si è immersa nell’industria spaziale e la missione è diventata il suo unico scopo di vita, ma nel giugno del 2024, Maezawa ha annullato bruscamente la missione, lasciando l’equipaggio a raccogliere i frammenti delle proprie vite.

Il lavoro presentato qui mostra realtà e finzione attraverso un cortometraggio che fonde messinscena, IA, materiali d’archivio e filmati documentari, oltre a fotografie, un libro d'artista in stile dossier che traccia il suo viaggio e l’opportunità di registrare il proprio interesse per il volo spaziale umano. Il progetto riflette la ricalibrazione mentale dell’artista che elabora una perdita quasi irriferibile e incomunicabile e tenta di rientrare nella sua vita precedente: L’opera rappresenta sia un sacrario dei sogni perduti che una proposta per un futuro alternativo.

Rhiannon Adam è un’artista fotografica queer irlandese, attiva tra Londra, New York e il Sudafrica. Ha studiato al Central Saint Martins e all’Università di Cambridge, ed è autrice di tre libri, tra cui Big Fence / Pitcairn Island e Polaroid: The Missing Manual. I suoi progetti di ricerca a lungo termine, esplorano narrazioni complesse legate all’ingiustizia sociale, alle comunità marginali e all’abuso di potere, indagando i sottili confini tra utopia e distopia, realtà e finzione. La sua pratica si fonda sullo studio del rapporto causa-effetto, osservando il micro per riflettere sulle urgenze macro del nostro tempo. Pur radicata nella fotografia, le sue esplorazioni includono materiali d’archivio, video e audio, mettendo in discussione la natura stessa del medium fotografico. Adam ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti, tra cui il New Talent Award della Photographers’ Gallery, il Meitar Award for Excellence in Photography e i Sony World Photography Awards. Il suo lavoro è stato esposto e pubblicato a livello internazionale.

In 2021, Adam was selected as the only female crew member from a million applicants to participate in “dearMoon”, a week-long lunar circumnavigation program abroad with Elon Musk and SpaceX’s Starship launched by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa. For three years, Adam immersed himself in the space industry and the mission became her sole purpose, but in June 2024, Maezawa abruptly canceled the mission, leaving the crew to pick up the fragments of their lives.

The work presented here blurs fact and fiction through a short film merging fiction, AI, archival materials and documentary footage, alongside photographs, a dossier-style artist’s book tracing his journey and an opportunity to record his own interest in human spaceflight. The project reflects the artist's mental recalibration as he processes an almost unrelatable and incommunicable loss and attempts to re-enter her former life: the work represents both a shrine to lost dreams and a proposal for an alternative future.

Rhiannon Adam is an Irish queer photographic artist working between London, New York and South Africa. She studied at Central Saint Martins and Cambridge University, and is the author of three books, including “Big Fence / Pitcairn Island” and “Polaroid: The Missing Manual”. Her long-term research projects explore complex narratives of social injustice, marginalised communities and the abuse of power, investigating the fine lines between utopia and dystopia, reality and fiction. Her practice is grounded in the study of cause and effect, looking at the micro to reflect on the macro urgencies of our time. While rooted in photography, her explorations include archive, video and audio, questioning the very nature of the photographic medium. Adam has received numerous awards, including the Photographers’ Gallery New Talent Award, the Meitar Award for Excellence in Photography and the Sony World Photography Awards. Her work has been exhibited and published internationally.
