6TH CONTINENT
6th Continent (Sesto continente) ha origine nel 2007, quando Mattia Insolera parte in barca a vela dall’Italia insieme a un amico che vuole attraversare l’Oceano Atlantico. Dopo due settimane di navigazione, Mattia capisce che ciò che gli interessa di più è la vita sulla terraferma. Decide di dedicare gli anni successivi a realizzare un progetto fotografico sulla cultura mediterranea. Il Mediterraneo del XXI secolo è diventato terreno di discordie: un recinto di filo spinato che divide nord e sud del mondo. È anche il bacino in cui hanno luogo i maggiori conflitti del pianeta, è un passaggio pericoloso per chi è in fuga da miseria e guerra. Ma non è sempre stato così: in passato questo mare interno comprendeva e collegava tutto. Mattia vuole scoprire se sia rimasto qualcosa di quell’epoca, e lo fa puntando la macchina fotografica sulla gente che ancora considera il mare un mezzo di trasporto, un’area di scambio, in altre parole un Sesto Continente.
Nato a Bologna nel 1977, Mattia Insolera ha ricevuto numerosi premi tra cui Canon Italia Award, Alberobello Portfolio Award e Fnac European Talent Latent Award. Attualmente è rappresentato dall’agenzia fotografica Luz.
“6th Continent” was born in 2007, as Mattia Insolera got on board with a friend determined to undertake the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. After two weeks, he felt that his sailing experience was over. He decided that from then on he would explore the world on the ground, searching through the folds of the Mediterranean coastline.
The Mediterranean of the XXI Century has become divisive: a barbed wired fence between the north and the south of the world. It is also the basin where the major conflicts of the world are taking place, a dangerous passage for those who flee from misery and war. It wasn’t always like this. In the past, this inner sea was inclusive: a bridge connecting shores and different cultures, a fertile soil for the very first civilizations. Mattia wanted to find out if something remained of that time so he focused his camera on people who still use the sea as a means for transportation, an area of exchange, in other words, people who still experience living in the Sixth Continent.
Mattia Insolera was born in Bologna in 1977. He has received numerous prizes, including the Canon Italia Award, the Alberobello Portfolio Award and the FNAC European Latent Talent Award. He is currently represented by Luz Photo Agency.
