Quarant’anni fa, durante un tramonto di fine giugno del 1980, la Storia è arrivata a Ustica. A 115 km da questa piccola emersione del mar Tirreno, un aereo di linea precipitò in mare senza lasciare superstiti. Da quel giorno Ustica cessò di essere isola e divenne strage. Accostando immagini di vita dell’isola a paesaggi legati invece alla strage stessa, Jacob vuole offrire uno spunto di riflessione sul legame tra questi due significati così antitetici, sui motivi in cui questo legame si è improvvisamente creato e sulle conseguenze. A quarant’anni dalla strage, si vogliono ricordare e onorare le 81 vittime riabilitando Ustica nel suo significato originario di isola.
Jacob Balzani Lööv (Milano, Italia, 1977) è un fotografo italo-svedese. Ama le storie di persone fortemente legate a un luogo, sia questo un territorio conteso o una giungla tropicale. Il suo metodo è camminare: crede che per connettersi con un luogo bisogna misurarlo coi propri passi. Jacob vive tra Milano e il Monte Rosa.
Forty years ago, just moments before the sun was setting down on the 27th of June 1980, History arrived in Ustica. 115 kilometres away from this tiny emersion of the Tyrrhenian Sea, an airliner crashed in the water leaving no survivors. From that day Ustica ceased to be an island and became a massacre. Combining images of life on the island and landscapes linked to the tragedy, Jacob wants to offer a cue to reflect upon the link between those two antithetic meanings, and how this connection was suddenly formed and its consequences. After forty years from the massacre we want to remember and honour the 81 victims while rehabilitating Ustica in its original meaning of island.
Jacob Balzani Lööv (Milan, Italy, 1977) is an Italian-Swedish photographer. He loves stories of people strongly linked to a place, be it a disputed territory or a tropical jungle. His method is to walk: he believes that to connect with a place you have to measure it with your own steps. Jacob lives between Milan and Monte Rosa.
