The Death of Lake Urmia

Un tempo il lago Urmia, in Iran, era il secondo bacino di acqua salata più grande al mondo. Negli ultimi vent’anni il lago si è prosciugato, riducendosi a volte a meno del 20% della sua grandezza media. Secondo i ricercatori, la secca è dovuta al calo delle piogge e all’innalzamento delle temperature, all’inefficienza dell’agricoltura, allo sfruttamento delle falde acquifere e alla costruzione di nuove dighe. Il progetto documenta l’impatto del prosciugamento del lago Urmia sulle persone e sull'ambiente circostante.
Solmaz Daryani (Iran, 1987) è una fotografa autodidatta che vive tra l’Iran e il Regno Unito. Con i suoi lavori a lungo termine indaga le connessioni tra cambiamento climatico, ambiente, crisi idrica, geografia e identità.
Iran’s Lake Urmia was once the second-largest saltwater lake in the world. In the past two decades, the lake has dried out, shrinking at times to less than 20% of its average size. Researchers blame declining rainfall and rising temperatures, inefficiency in agriculture, and over-exploitation of groundwater and new dams for much of the drying out. The project investigates the impacts of the drying of Urmia Lake on people and the environment around it.
Solmaz Daryani (Iran, 1987) is a self-taught Iranian documentary photographer based in Iran and the UK. Through her long-term works, she investigates the connections between climate change, environment, water crisis/security, geography, and human identity.
